Cellulite Creams that Actually Work

Clarins Total Body Lift, $59.50

Form: A cream massaged into cellulite-prone areas daily
Active ingredients: Hortonia, Baccharis, caffeine, cangzhu, cat's claw, mint, sunflower, agrimony
Effectiveness: "I saw a 30 percent improvement in appearance of cellulite on my legs."
Pros: The formula was highly moisturizing, with a minty smell, silky texture and refreshing tingly feeling for more than an hour post-application.
Cons: None
Tester: Divya, TotalBeauty.com reader (moderate cellulite)

Bliss fatgirlsleep, $38

Form: Cream massaged in nightly before bedtime
Active ingredients: Lotus and red algae extracts, lavender essence
Effectiveness: "It didn't get rid of cellulite, but it made my skin very smooth."
Pros: "This cream is worth the [price] for the unique buttery lavender scent which seems to aid in better sleep. I almost can't go to bed without it."
Cons: "The package recommends using this at night and following up with sister product FatGirlSlim each morning, I didn't do both so maybe the combo would yield more impressive cellulite-diminishing results."
Tester: Kristen, TotalBeauty.com Senior Editor (light cellulite)

L'Oreal Paris Sublime Slim Night, $14.39

Form: Gel massaged in nightly before bedtime
Active ingredients: Gingko extract, Par-Elastyl, caffeine
Effectiveness: "I still have cellulite -- maybe not as bad as before, but not worth the trouble of massaging this gel on every night. I suspect the massaging did more than the gel itself."
Pros: It's not greasy and dries fast.
Cons: "The directions didn't make much sense. Why would you focus the massage on the front of your thigh, as directed?"
Tester: Alex, TotalBeauty.com reader (light cellulite)

Estee Lauder Anti-Cellulite Advanced Visible Contouring Serum, $52.50

Form: Serum to be applied twice daily
Active ingredients: Forskolin extract, Brazilian Guarana seeds and Chinese black tea (caffeine)
Effectiveness: "I did see results. My thighs are tighter and firmer."
Pros: Easy, no-mess pump; non-sticky, non-greasy formula; no massage necessary; enjoyable cool tingling sensation; great smell; absorbs quickly and doesn't rub off and ruin clothes.
Cons: "I wasn't the best at using it both day and night. Sometimes I forgot."
Tester: Jae, TotalBeauty.com reader (light cellulite)

Chanel Precision Body Excellence Firming and Shaping Gel Anti-Cellulite, $75

Form: Gel massaged in twice daily
Active ingredients: Purple Bengle PFA, Sphacelaria brown algae extract, lipo-amino acid
Effectiveness: "My skin started looking and feeling firmer almost instantly. Moderate cellulite appeared reduced, but not significantly. I can't imagine someone with severe cellulite getting their money's worth from this."
Pros: Easy-to-use pump bottle. The formula felt "satiny and luxurious" as well as "refreshing, tingly and cool -- a huge bonus for anyone who lives in a hot climate or spends all day on their feet." Moderately moisturizing, the gel also made legs look "smooth and brilliant."
Cons: "The scent was a mixture of floral and herbal scents that became a bit cloying after a few applications."
Tester: Sachiko, TotalBeauty.com reader (moderate cellulite)

Booty Parlor Flirty Little Secret (Bronze Edition), $32

Form: Bronzing lotion massaged in daily
Active ingredients: Tritosol XM (wheat protein), rahnella/soy protein ferment, algae extract, peptides
Effectiveness: "I would use this for a quick bronze look, which helps mask cellulite, before hitting the beach. But I didn't notice any cellulite reduction. Also, the bronzing agent in this [tinted] lotion is so strong, it isn't practical to use daily for four to six weeks to obtain the claimed tightening results."
Pros: "After buffing off excess product with a dry washcloth, I was left with a nice bronze glow. Also, the scent is light and pleasant."
Cons: "I allowed the lotion to dry for 30 minutes, but I still left bronze marks on anything I came into contact with. It's too messy to use daily."
Tester: Jenn, TotalBeauty.com reader (moderate cellulite)

Karin Herzog Silhouette, $38

Form: Cream applied nightly before bedtime
Active ingredients: Hydrogen peroxide, retinol (vitamin A)
Effectiveness: "My skin became firmer and had a smoother appearance after using it. I saw a noticeable improvement in the cellulite on the back of my thighs."
Pros: "It was perfect. I really liked the product because of the overall results, lack of smell and ease of use." There was no massage needed and it absorbed quickly to leave legs smooth.
Cons: "If you have a cut or burn on your hands, be careful because it will sting."
Tester: Brandi, TotalBeauty.com reader (moderate cellulite)

Prescribed Solutions Body of Knowledge Slimming & Contouring Creme, $135

Form: Lotion applied twice daily
Active ingredients: Lecithin, caffeine, butcherbroom, TEA-hydroiodide, escin and tripeptide-3
Effectiveness: "I saw some smoothing in my skin texture and was happy with the results."
Pros: "It looked rich but felt lightweight."
Cons: "I didn't particularly like the smell, and the twice-a-day application was hard to maintain. The lotion also took some time to absorb; I often got the solution on my hands if I scratched my leg or adjusted my clothing."
Tester: Nancy, TotalBeauty.com reader (light cellulite)

Murad Firm and Tone Dietary Supplement Pack, $135, and Serum, $75

Form: Serum massaged in twice daily plus pre-packaged pills taken twice daily
Active ingredients: (in serum) cayenne pepper, horse nut tree extract, tiger's herb and cat's claw, (in supplements) Vitamins A, C, D and E, fish oil, flaxseed oil, soybean oil, gotu kola extract

>Effectiveness: "I had improved skin tone and less noticeable cellulite, which must have gotten smoothed out a bit from this process. But I did still have some obvious cellulite."
Pros: "While I thought it would be grueling to take seven pills every morning and six at night, surprisingly I was able to stick to the program pretty well because of the convenient to-go packs they're packaged in. Also, the clear serum tingled a bit as it worked to increase circulation to the area, but it didn't stink and it dried quickly."
Cons: "The difference was subtle, and the products only seemed to help while I was on the program."
Tester: Debra, TotalBeauty.com reader (light cellulite)

Clarins Body Shaping Supplement, $74

Form: Serum, 6-8 drops of which is mixed in with everyday body lotion
Active ingredients: Baccharis, hortonia, cat's claw, geranium, Cangzhu, caffeine, Guarana and agrimony
Effectiveness: "Cellulite was still there but it appeared less obvious. Skin looked firmer overall."
Pros: No massage required. "The texture was nice and absorbed quite quickly without leaving any finish on the skin. It was also pretty easy to use. I am so busy that I loved how easy it was to work into my lifestyle."
Cons: "The smell of the product wasn't too bad, although I wouldn't say I enjoyed it … it was a bit medicinal smelling."
Tester: Patti, TotalBeauty.com reader (moderate cellulite)

Estee Lauder Body Performance Firming Body Creme, $37.50

Form: Cream applied daily
Active ingredients: Brazilian Coffee Seed Extract, Brazilian Muru-Muru Butter, bio-peptide extract
Effectiveness: "This creme didn't make even a minor improvement in my cellulite, however, its goal was to help keep skin 'firm' and supple. I could maybe buy that, but as far as getting rid of the dimples, this product is a definite no-go."
Pros: "The only real benefit was that it did make my skin soft and smooth to the touch right after application."
Cons: "On first sniff it smelled nice but as the weeks wore on, I found the smell to be rather chemical -- somewhat similar to that of self-tanning creams."
Tester: Molly, TotalBeauty.com reader (light cellulite)
