Would you ever consider an apple or a bag of cherries a luxury? In Japan they are, considering that apple will run you about $25 and the cherries about $100, and you have to buy them at a specialty fruit shop.
This explains why someone in Japan just dropped more than $15,000 for a pair of Yubari melons (a variety of cantaloupe).

Sound crazy? Well, Japan isn't the only country growing extreme fruit.
In England they're growing a single pineapple that's now on sale for a staggering $15,000. I'm guessing whoever buys it is in for some delicious fruit salad (at least I hope).
Weigh in: Can you ever imagine paying that much for a piece of fruit?
