We hear style rules all the time: White is forbidden after Labor Day, blondes look terrible in yellow and redheads can't wear pink. Last we checked, rules, even of the style variety, were made to be broken. Regardless of your hair color or skin tone, it's possible to look fabulous in any hue -- you just need to know which shades to look for.
The Rule: Blondes can't wear yellow
Break it: After seeing this marigold shade on stylish blondes all over the runways and red carpets, we know it can be done. If you have a pale complexion or platinum blonde hair, try a deep, mustard yellow (think: Michelle Williams at the 2006 Oscars) to avoid looking washed-out. Warmer blondes, on the other hand, should try bright, lemon-y yellows.
The Rule: Very pale and dark complexions can't wear nudes
Break it:
Anyone can look great in nude -- it just depends on what shade of nude you choose. If you have a porcelain or paler complexion, look for rosy and pink nudes. If you have a darker skin tone, delve into taupe-grey nudes. Steer clear of anything that's
too close to your skin tone.
The Rule: Redheads can't wear red or pink
Break it: Emma Stone -- who has worn both at the same time -- would politely disagree. If you have fair skin, go for a true red. If you have a dark or olive complexion, try a deeper tone, like a brick red with hints of burgundy. Strawberry blonde hair looks great with pale pinks and salmon, while auburn hair looks great with fuchsias and berry pinks like
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure, $7.99, in Back to the Fuchsia (420).
The Rule: People with cool undertones should stick with silver; those with warm undertones should wear gold
Break it: Metallic is having a serious fashion moment, so this is no time to discriminate. Many of us have a mix of undertones that allow us to wear either. Embrace the arm party by mixing your precious metals together. Try wearing silver bangles with gold ones, layering different necklaces or complementing your jewelry with a metallic manicure using
