Nothing Says Fall Like Flannel Hair

Here's how to find the right flannel shade for your skin tone

2018 has already brought us a ton of strange hair color shades, with pixelated, tie-dye and Cheeto (yes, really) coloring ideas getting major attention on Instagram. Now, flannel hair color is the latest technique to grab our interest and it's the answer to everyone's fall fever.

If you can't quite imagine what flannel hair color looks like, Nunzio Saviano Salon expert colorist Tiffanie Richards says to envision all the rich colors that make up a cozy winter flannel. "Imagine a blend of deep reds, browns, blacks, oranges through the length of your hair," Richards says. "This is what creates the flannel hair trend."

To get the look, CHI Haircare Creative Artistic Team Member Cynthia Diersen says that it's best to hit the salon, as an experienced colorist will successfully be able to melt a cool merlot shade into a warm copper red, adding some bolder accents of crimson and auburn. This helps you achieve that snuggly flannel like-hue that will definitely stand out, she says.

But while this warm and bright hair color may seem too intense for some, Diersen says it can be pulled off by almost anyone. The trick is to tailor your ideal shade to your skin tone. "The best way to determine what hair color will favor your skin tone is by identifying if your skin tone has natural warm or cool undertones," she says. Someone who has light olive tones looks best with some warm reds in their hair, while deeper olive skin can wear cooler red tones and light ivory can rock fiery reds, she says.

Richards adds that bold colors (especially a mix of them) can be very overwhelming on fair skin, but that darker skin can benefit from these tones, which will bring out the warmth in cheeks and make eye colors pop.

And probably the best part about flannel hair color is that it isn't very high maintenance. Kate Reid, design director at Kevin Murphy, says it's the perfect color look for busy clients on the go. And thanks to recent at-home product innovations, maintaining your hair color at home doesn't have to be a huge hassle with products like Kevin Murphy Autumn Angel, $38, which helps to maintain copper, auburn and pink tones.

Richards, however, says that a variety of different tones can mean fast color fade. To keep your color as vibrant and bold as possible, she recommends going to the salon every four weeks for that necessary touch-up.
