One Woman's $1,000 a Month Hair Care Habit

How a beauty writer's obsession cost her a pretty penny

Once upon a time there was a girl named Sandra Ballentine who was hired by W, the beauty bible, to write about her obsession -- namely having her hair professionally blown dry. A lot.

So far reaching was Ballentine's passion (addiction) for the salon blow out that each month she'd plop down $1,000 on thrice-weekly appointments. The first indication that she might have a little problem was the realization that she didn't even own shampoo. "I don't wash my own hair," she says matter-of-factly, "unless I'm at some kind of boot camp or on safari."

For the article, like any self-respecting addict, Ballentine was forced to go through a withdrawal of sorts. "To write the piece, I would have to abstain from dryers, flat irons, hot rollers, and curling irons for three months--the salon-a-holics equivalent of checking into Promises," she writes in W. "The first time I lathered up and air-dried, I looked like an extra from Game of Thrones."

Of course, any one who's ever read (and guffawed over) "White Girl Problems" knows that the main character, Babe Walker's, life is rife with such tribulations and, perhaps, that's what makes these types of "issue" so much fun. ABC News certainly thought so, they sent a news crew out to document Ballentine's hair travails. You can see the clip here.

What do you think? Interesting topic or ratings' stunt?
