Why Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Lawrence Cut Off Their Hair

The actresses discuss what motivated them to go the pixie route

It's been a week of celebrity hair hysteria. Kristen Chenoweth and Jennifer Aniston have both gone shorter -- with mega bytes of Internet coverage to document it. And, Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Lawrence went all the way, cutting their long hair into "now that's a commitment" pixies.

Anderson, who had pretty much become synonymous with long blonde hair and a big bosom, took the beauty world by storm when she showed up a few days before the NYC Marathon (which she ran to earn money for Sean Penn's Haiti relief charity) looking suspiciously like -- Charlize Theron!

What prompted the cut? As Anderson, 46, explained to Ellen DeGeneres, "I just thought my hair had had a life and I kind of wanted to put that behind me and start fresh. And I also thought it would be good for the marathon."

So being more aerodynamic factored into the decision. Interesting. You'd think her long hair would've interfered with her lifesaving duties on "Baywatch" too, but, oh yeah, that was make believe.

Now, Jennifer Lawrence has an entirely different story. The 27 year-old whose new "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" movie opens next week, didn't cut off her trademark long hair for a role or to run 26 miles. So, then, why the bold move?

As the Oscar winner explained to Yahoo! Employees during an open Q&A with Marissa Meyer, she'd cut it to a bob length, "And then it grew to that awkward, gross length. And I kept putting it back in a bun, and I was like 'Well, I don't want to do this.' So I just cut it off. Not a very exciting story." And, as she explained later during a Google+ Hangout, even award-winning actresses' hair isn't immune to the damages of hair color; "[it was] "fried from being dyed too much."

[Editor's Note: Katniss will not be braid-less in the next movie. Lawrence says that she's wearing a wig while shooting "Mockingjay."]

There you have them; two simple stories, two equally stunning results.
