Demeter, a fragrance company whose mission statement is to "highlight the beautiful scents that surround us everyday, in wearable formats," has just added Pizza perfume to its stable of scents.
It's obviously a little weird," CEO Mark Crames says of the scent which smells
just like a pizzeria. Then again, "weird" is nothing new for the company that includes everything from
Cannabis Flower and
Earthworm to
Frozen Pond and
Paperback among its roster of 250+ scents.
"In the past we shied away from scents like pizza, bacon, gun powder and blood, thinking they were not wearable," Crames says when asked what made him finally go for the crust-o. Seems that as part of a promotional blitz, a Canadian Pizza Hut franchise created a pizza scent and the pie eating public couldn't get enough, so... "I realized, we are the leader, we set the trend and if people are moving past us we are missing the boat."

The brand, which also has licenses for both Tootsie Roll Industries (Dots, Junior Mints and Tootsie Roll scents) and Sanrio (Hello Kitty and her friends represent), looks to its fragrances to impart a "single experience" meaning that unlike traditional perfumes which combine several notes to achieve a certain smell and linger on the skin for an extended period of time, theirs are "pick me ups" which deliver a blast of a familiar aroma and dissipate shortly thereafter.
"Pizza" is available on the company's
website in 8 different permutations ($6 will get you a 1/2 oz. mini cologne splash while $12 buys a "Pick-Me-Up" massage & body oil) and will be available at select Duane Reade and Walgreen's stores later in the year.
