Back in the day, it was perfectly acceptable to slather yourself in baby oil and roast in the sun like a rotisserie chicken, flipping over every half hour for an even, golden-brown glow. And people would openly gawk, admiring -- even envying -- your sun-baked skin.
These days, you're more likely to get glared at and a stern lecture about skin cancer if you have a bottle of baby oil in your beach bag. So, fair warning: You'll probably get a few sideways looks if you bust out
L'Oreal's new Sublime Sun Advanced Sunscreen Oil Spray SPF 50+.
It
seems like it should be bad for you: An oil that smells like high-end fragrance, feels soft on your skin, and gives you a gorgeous glow -- instead of the typical goopy, greasy, coconut-scented lotion. But with SPF 50 (it's available in SPF 15 and 30, too) it really does hold up to traditional sunscreens.
I tried it out at my friend's BBQ over the weekend, and not only did I have the best legs in the bunch thanks to the glowy sheen of the oil, but I was also one of the few people who didn't end up burned at the end of the day. It's easy to apply, it has a spray pump, spreads evenly (thanks to the oil texture), and soaks into your skin quickly so there's no greasy feeling. And unlike my regular sunscreen, there's no need to really rub it in and get rid of the white cast, since there's no color.
I wouldn't use it on my face -- shiny legs are lovely, but a shiny forehead not so much. But it's great from the neck down. You could also spritz a tiny amount on your part and your hair for shine and sun protection.
I'll definitely be wearing this the rest of the summer, especially when I want to SPF to impress. Oh, and the icing on the cake: It's only $10.99 for a bottle!
