Reader Q&A: Your Questions About Color Treated Hair -- Answered!See an expert answer your most pressing hair color questions |
Question: "I touched up my gray roots a week and a half ago and within a week they were already lighter than the rest of my hair. I already use color-treated shampoo and conditioner." -- Meghan L. Answer: It sounds like "you're using the wrong color when doing the roots," says Johns. "Hair color should last three to six weeks or until the roots start to grow out. The ashier the color, the less gray coverage. The warmer the color, the better for covering grays," he advises. Also, be sure that you're using a permanent color that's intended for covering gray because semi-permanent color simply can't offer the same coverage. And, Johns says to continue using color-treated hair products in the shower because they will help keep color truer longer.
Ones to try: AVEENO LIVING COLOR Color-Preserving Shampoo, $6 and AVEENO LIVING COLOR Color-Preserving Conditioner, $6, which come in two variants -- one for fine and one for medium to thick hair.

I wasn't sure what color I wanted, so I decided to go with a temporary color that comes out with 28 washes. I'm glad I did that because I'm not happy with the color I chose. I think it's too dark. So I'm going to try a lighter shade next.

i haven't dyed my hair since I stopped working. I now want to try something to cover my mostly grey hair, My hair is shoulder length very thick and curly. When I did color my hair my temples and hair line only lasted about a week, Any suggestions for a more successful coloring? Thanks

The question was not answered. Which hair color works best on gray hair? We want to know which store bought brand works best on gray hair.

Before I started turning gray my hair was jet black. It started changing when I turned 18. I was told because of the stress that was on my body from having my first child. NO ONE in my family turned gray as fast as I did. Most of my hair is a silvery, white gray from front to back. Is there a real reason why I turned gray so quickly I'm pretty much healthy. I'm 46 now. Also, I'm trying to go blonde but don't like the gold blondes and I seen you say ash is not good for gray. What is?
