Step Two: Revamp Your Hair Color To add dimension to a new cut (especially on dark hair), ask your stylist for very subtle, all-over highlights. Here, Rona combines Miss Clairol and Clairol Professional Premium Cr�me for all-over "brownlites" using a technique she developed for Clairol Professional's "True Color from the Heart" in support of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign. You can also ask for highlights to be placed around your face and at the tips of your layers only. (Watch this video to do this correctly at home.) "[The effect] feels brighter, as if the sun would have done it," Rona says. The best part for low-maintenance types: Subtle highlights like these only need to be touched up around the hairline every few months.
