Skin Care
I Spent Thousands Battling Hormonal Acne, and a $20 Regimen Cured ItThrough a four-year trial-and-error method, I finally found what keeps my acne under control |
Acne? Me? I didn't start out as a pimply person. In high school, I had relatively good skin. I occasionally got red spots, but they healed quickly and went away on their own.
But in my 20s, adult acne blindsided me. Seemingly out of nowhere, I started to break out uncontrollably. It began as clogged pores on my chin, which turned into inflamed whiteheads that spread from my cheeks all the way up to my forehead. The more I tried to clear my skin, the more pimples I seemed to get. I don't think a day went by without me getting a minimum of five new pimples. Soon, more of my pores were inflamed than not. It felt like acne was eating my face alive.
Meanwhile, my self-esteem and general happiness were taking a hard hit. Convinced that everyone was grossed out by my acne, I locked myself in my room, turning down every social invitation sent my way. I had trouble looking people in the eye.
I became obsessed with finding a way to clear my skin. I decided that there must be a way to get my clear skin back, and I put my skin through every acne remedy known to man in order to get it — and spent a small fortune in the process.
I wanted clear skin so desperately that I did a lot of things to my skin that I really regret. Here, the diary of my methods, which I kept so I could keep track of what worked (practically nothing) and finally, the one thing that did.
