9 Gluten-Free Hair Products for Every Step of Your RoutineThese shampoos, conditioners, and more are free of potential irritants |
A gluten-free diet is a must for anyone like myself who has celiac disease. But it's not as simple as quitting bread and pasta: As a big fan of gummy vitamins, I quickly realized post-diagnosis earlier this year that I could no longer just pop a hair health-promoting biotin supplement because some actually contain gluten. Instead, I'd have to carefully pay attention to the label.
I also learned that in some cases, it pays to use gluten-free shampoo, conditioner, and styling products. While it's not strictly necessary to switch to gluten-free hair care products if you have celiac disease, some people with this condition like to cut gluten out of their beauty routine for peace of mind. That's because touching your product-filled hair and then touching your mouth could lead you to accidentally ingesting gluten. (Yep, it's a small risk, but one some people just don't want to worry about.)
Plus, people with eczema or easily-irritated skin sometimes report that gluten aggravates their scalp and skin. (FYI, you'll often find gluten in ingredients like hydrolyzed wheat protein and wheat germ oil. You'll want to read the label closely, as anything with wheat, barley, or rye has gluten in it.)
I've transitioned to gluten-free everything in an effort to minimize any potential exposure, and it's definitely eased my stress. Luckily, there are a lot of amazing gluten-free hair care products out there, so the change hasn't been difficult.
Here, I've rounded up my favorite gluten-free hair care products for you to try, from shampoos to hair masks to hair vitamins. (And ICYMI, here are the best gluten-free snacks I've tried.)
