Galactomyces: The Secret Asian Skin Care Ingredient That Does It AllLearn everything about this super ingredient, which is mostly found in Korean and Japanese skin care products |
You may have noticed something called "galactomyces ferment filtrate" — aka "Pitera," or just "galactomyces" for short — in some of your favorite Asian skin care products. But what is it really — and how good is it for your skin?
Legend has it, the ingredient — which is a natural byproduct of the sake fermentation process — was discovered after researchers noticed the softening, anti-aging effects it had on sake brewers' hands back in Japan. Long story short, the stuff became the hero ingredient for SK-II, and the rest is history.
So, what is it, exactly? It's basically a fermented byproduct of yeast. And like most fermented skin care ingredients, it's known for soothing and softening troubled skin, while adding in hydration and strengthening the skin barrier. It's also thought to have anti-aging benefits, thanks in part to its high concentration of antioxidants.
The bottom line? Well, it's an ingredient we tend to enjoy — so, without any further ado, here are some of our favorite galactomyces skin care products.
