Ingrown hairs develop when the free edge of the hair does not make its way past the outer skin layer. "Instead of growing out, it actually buries itself within the skin itself," says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. "As it continues to grow, it may turn into a painful bump or even become infected." Gross.
