Why Squalane Should Be Your New Favorite OilIt may have a funny name but the benefits of squalane are no joke |
In a world of fragrant rosehip seed oils and exotic argan oils, the word "squalane" stands out — and it's been popping up with more frequency lately. So, what exactly is squalane? And why does it belong in our skincare routine?
We talked to board-certified New York-based dermatologist Dr. Margarita Lolis, and she broke it down for us, explaining that squalane is "able to act as a natural antioxidant skin moisturizer while helping to prevent fine lines." And since antioxidants are key when it comes to protecting skin from the elements, that's definitely something worth taking note of. She also praised squalane's ability to lubricate and protect skin.
Another thing that makes squalane stand out from the pack? "It makes up about 10-12 percent of your skin's oil and is produced naturally by the body," said Lolis. And since it's part of our skin's natural oil production, it makes for an especially gentle skincare step that works for most skin types. (Though if you're oily and/or acne prone, Lolis notes that you might want to apply with a lighter hand).
