  • Eye Whitening Surgery: A New Genius Beauty Technology or Torture Treatment?

  • Evidently, I'm not in Kansas anymore. Ok, so I've never been to Kansas but based on the conversation I had with my friend Lynn this morning, I must be somewhere over the rainbow.

  • Me: Hey, want to have lunch today?

  • Lynn: I can't, I'm having my eyes whitened.

  • Me: Huh?

  • Lynn: Yeah, it's a really cool new procedure that makes your eyes totally white! They just remove some membrane and, voila, you look eons younger.

  • Me: Um, I think I'd rather try one of these anti-aging tricks. And I have to go.

  • CLICK.

  • Ok. Let me process this.

  • It's true that I sometimes get frustrated with my bloodshot eyes. And, I did once hear Julie Campbell, the editor of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, say that having super-bright whites of your eyes is what makes Elle Macpherson so stunning (yeah, 'cause the rest of her is so unattractive) but I'm not sure that either of those are enough tempt me into having a membranes removed from my EYES.

  • However, because Lynn is generally a sane person and, because I love learning about the newest (sometimes wackadoodle) procedures and products -- like the ones on this list, I decided to find out more before passing judgment.

  • Turns out that there's a Korean doctor named Bong-Hyun Kim who pioneered Cosmetic Eye Whitening Surgery™ 13 years ago in Seoul. 13,000 plus procedures later, the good doc is looking to bring his technique to the U.S. in the coming months.

  • If you can't wait for him to get to a city near you, you can always wing on over to La-La land, where patients who are bothered by yellow, discolored or veiny eyes can submit to a procedure called EyeBrite Eye Whitening™.

  • Available only at the Boxer-Wachler vision institute the "pain free" procedure takes 5-20 minutes per eye during which time "a thin membrane covering the white portion of the eye is removed. This membrane holds the unsightly red veins and yellow or brown material. A crystal clear membrane (without red blood vessels, yellow or brown spots) grows back in its place." There are no stitches, no grafts and full results are expected within eight weeks of the surgery.

  • Sounds simple enough and I'm sure it's nice to have clear eyes, but I think I'll wait a while before electing to have this surgery.

  • • Think this procedure sounds as crazy as I do, but still want a youthful look? Follow this advice.

  • • Even top dermatologist wouldn't do something this drastic -- I think. Find out here what they do do to look years younger.

  • • Or if you're simply obsessed with having white eyes, follow these steps to achieve a classic smoky eye -- dark eye makeup will likely make your eyes look whiter, right?
