How to Get the Beautiful Hair Color for Your Wedding

We recently gave you a comprehensive wedding day beauty countdown guide -- covering everything from brows to Botox. But we wanted to expound on the hair color portion since we just caught up with Michael Canale, Jennifer Aniston's (see her sexiest styles ever here) long-term colorist (he did hers and Brad's wedding color for their big day -- sniff).
Here Canale shares some why-didn't-we-think-of-that wedding hair color tips:
First, start planning with your colorist three to six months, or even a year before your wedding. This way the color you create will enhance the style you plan to wear.
If you're going for an updo (see the best wedding hairstyles for your gown here), "there is a certain style of highlight for an updo," says Canale. Show your stylist the type of look you want to re-create because highlights should go in different positions for different updos. For example, if you plan to wear a high updo, highlights should start at your ears, underneath the hair. For a lower-placed updo, highlights should be woven in from the part at the crown of your head, instead of throughout.
Regardless of the style you choose, always avoid getting wide strips of any color -- even if they're darker than your natural hue.
As your wedding day approaches, visit your salon twice more in the final two weeks before your big day to put on the finishing touches. Here's what you should do on those visits:
Two weeks before, get your roots touched up overall, says Canale.
Then four days before your wedding, go in for spot highlights. Have your colorist recreate your updo and look for any dark spots that need to be broken up with a slim highlight. "You don't want these giant thumbprints of darkness making your hair look heavy," says Canale.
He recommends that your last-minute touch-ups include touching up the roots over your ears (for a high updo), then doing what he calls a beach wash. "You want to look sun-kissed, like you just spent a week at the beach." To accomplish this, Canale recommends painting a bleaching agent on the hairline over the sink, while the hair is wet, and rinses it out one minute later. This technique takes out the ash and leaves a golden overlay.
A final tip: When it comes to wedding day color "always go lighter -- never darker," which can be harsh and aging, he says. You want to keep your color looking natural, but a lighter color will elongate your neck, frame your face and show the lift of your cheek. And highlights should be noticeable, but not intrusive.
