  • The Best Budget Beauty Tips I've Heard Lately

  • In case you hadn't heard (maybe that rock you live under is really heavy?), we're in a bit of a recession. We may be spending a little less money, but we still want to look good, right? Enter this money-saving advice we've gotten from hair and makeup experts:

  • 1. Use anti-aging products that you don’t like for your face on your body. No need to toss that $40 retinol-infused product for no reason. Hands (elbows, knees and toes) need to stay pretty too.

  • 2. Hairstylist and salon owner Erin Anderson says she’s been using Tresemme 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse to add volume to hair in place of Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray. She claims it works just as well.

  • 3. San Francisco hair colorist Mia shares her favorite budget hair products: Pantene Spray Wax Studio Line (she says the ingredients are identical to the much pricier Warren-Tricomi spray wax), Sally Hershberger's Supreme Head product line (salon-quality products available at Walgreens), Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Deep Conditioner (versus a pricey salon conditioning treatment), and Charles Worthington Dream Hair Voluptuous Curls Defining Spray (for the perfect beach-y waves).

  • 4. Try a manicure kit (like Lippmann Collection Material Girl Essential Nail Set). They can seem a bit pricey, but when you compare them to a mani/pedi at a salon ($40 at the place I go to!) they start to seem way more reasonable.

  • 5. Make your salon hair color last longer by using a color glaze (one to try: John Frieda Color Glaze). Another new product Mimic Color -- it's perfect for root touchups. And don't forget Clairol Nice 'n Easy Root Touch-Up.

  • 6. Nicky Kinnaird, founder of SPACE.nk, has a few picks for less expensive, but still luxury products: Sonia Kashuk makeup brushes (I have one of these and it's as soft as a baby chinchilla), and MD Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel (way cheaper than a peel at your dermatologists office).
