The Secret to Health and Beauty: "Detoxify and Revitalize"
- Posted by Kristen on September 21, 2010 at 04:44PM
I, probably much like you, am a woman that full-heartedly believes I need an arsenal of anti-aging skin care products. I believe that a drink or pill can actually burn a hundred calories by simply ingesting it, thus magically granting me back my teenage body and metabolism (OK, I might be alone on that one). And, I use makeup as a crutch for my less-than-perfect skin.
I tell you this because I recently visited We Care Spa, a detoxification and spiritual retreat thats been covered by "VH1" and "E!" and touted as a celebrity secret for health and beauty. I knew going in that it was going to be the kind of place where my BlackBerry dependence wouldnt be appreciated and my love of fried food would have to fly under the radar. I would have to embrace what I so often preach, but rarely practice -- that beauty really does start from the inside out. The message and the "secret" that celebrities get from the spa is really common sense (yet so easy to forget when we know that great under eye concealers exist), which is that removing toxins from your body gives you better/younger-looking skin.
They preach that the best way to fight aging and get that natural healthy glow is through detoxification and revitalization -- not through a applying a bazillion products and bronzer. So I wanted to share a cheat sheet version of founder Susana Belen's "seven most important steps for rejuvenation and well-being," to inspire us and remind us both of how important taking care of our bodies is for our health and beauty.
Step 1: Avoid toxins
Avoid external pollution by: using an air purification system in your home, filtering your tap water, using natural cleaning products like white vinegar instead of mass produced products like Windex, avoiding cosmetics with artificial fragrances (or at least minimizing their use), and staying away from foods with colorings, flavorings, preservatives, sulfites, nitrates, salt and sugar.
Avoid internal pollution by: detoxifying your cells. Eliminate toxins in your lymphatic system through up-and-down movement (try jumping rope regularly) and breathing exercises. Basically, exercise. Drink lots of water to flush kidneys. Aim for two bowel movements a day. Breath deeply. Brush your skin every day with a body brush like The Body Shop Round Body Brush, $12 before showering to remove gunk from pores and exfoliate dead skin cells.
Step 2: Fast weekly
For one day a week, cleanse your body by fasting. Dont eat any solid foods and drink lots of fluids, the best being lemon water.
Step 3: Eat for good digestion
Here's how to do it:
Relax before your meal
Chew your food slowly and well -- until is practically liquid.
Drink no more than one cup of liquid during mealtime.
Eat only when you are hungry by eating only two solid meals a day -- drink nutritional drinks between those meals.
Step 4: Do breathing exercises
Oxygenate your body by setting time out of your day for deep breathing. Or every time you think about breathing, take ten deep breaths.
Step 5: Kitchen organization
Learn how to prep your kitchen so that you always have healthy snacks on hand and therefore arent tempted to get fast food. Make large quantities of healthy food ahead of time and freeze mini meals.
Step 6: Relaxation
Find a way to relax that works for you whether it is yoga, meditation, breathing, music, dancing or a hobby. Try and clear your mind at least once a day.
Step 7: Trust
Trust in yourself and trust in the universe. No matter what happens today, know that there will be a tomorrow where things can be wonderful again. "After the storm, the sun shines, and the clouds disappear," says Belen.
So what do you think? Do you/could you follow these steps? I am going to try (my best), because even though they would need to tear my bronzer from my cold, dead hand, after one day of fasting; I swear my skin had a glow I haven't seen in a while.
