Volunteering Makeover: You Don't Have to Be Angelina Jolie to Support a Cause
- Posted by Kristen on March 29, 2010 at 10:19AM
Giving back is all about finding a cause that speaks to you -- some of my volunteer experiences have been fulfilling, and others not so much (hello candy striping days). As of late, I volunteered to teach yoga at a wellness center for mentally ill patients. The students were all so attentive, focused and patient, and the breathing and movement really seemed to be positively affecting them. And I have to say, bringing some light into their lives seemed to brighten up my own inner glow.
If you haven't quite found your cause, here are 23 charities we love that are always in need of help and support. Plus, many beauty brands donate funds to charity and keep you looking pretty (a cause I'm always into supporting) such as Lush Charity Pot, $20.45; Philosophy Shower for a Cure, $20; and Mac Viva Glam Lipstick, $14. Here are a few of our fave charities.
Charity 1: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
The founder of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is Evelyn H. Lauder -- yes, she's part of the Estee Lauder dynasty. Which is why when October rolls around, many of the Estee Lauder brands (from Clinique to Aveda) sell special pink versions of their products to support this foundation. The organization has been working to raise funds for breast cancer research for the last 16 years. Join the cause.
Charity 2: V-Day
V-Day isn't just for candies and sweethearts ladies, it's a global movement to "stop violence against women and girls. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery." Get more info here.
Charity 3: Operation Smile
Operation Smile knows that our face is the first thing we present to the world, and many children around the world suffer from facial deformities that affect their entire lives. That's why they mobilize a force of medical professionals and caring hearts to provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and palate. See how to join the cause here.
Charity 4: In Defense of Animals
In Defense of Animals is a non-profit organization that fights for the rights of our fuzzy friends. So c'mon, help out your BFF (Best Four-legged Friend) by getting more info here.
