Sure, we could apply most makeup with our fingers, but what are we, animals? (You know, like all those makeup-applying chimps you see? Yeah, OK, maybe not.) For precise application, every woman needs a good set of makeup tools.

I love perfume and usually wear some every day, but I hate, hate perfume shopping. Because while I could try on strappy sandals or lipglosses for hours, after three or four spritzes of fragrance my head is aching, my nose is desensitized and I just want some fresh air. Sound familiar?

First of all, yes, I do realize the irony of a beauty Web site pointing out the cities with the most vain people. Sure, we do promote looking good and trying different hairstyles, makeup looks and skin care regimens, but we also know that there are healthy limits. (As fun as it is, a person can't spend all their time on their looks.)

How important is looking good to you? Would you dip into your savings to keep up your weekly mani/pedis? Would you get a second job to maintain your monthly highlights? How about stripping to finance a boob job?

Partying a little too much this holiday season? Whether it's too many cocktails at the office party (an open bar is a beautiful/disastrous thing) or even just too many late nights wrapping presents and watching "White Christmas," now's not the time to showcase how tired/hungover you are.

Personally, I like my hair color. True, it's a fairly standard brown, but I think it suits me. So I've never seriously considered coloring my hair. I mean, what's the point?

But actually, I've learned that there's a lot more to hair color than just going from brunette to blonde. Hair color can also add shine, dimension, even give flat hair like mine a nice volume boost.

You know that first impressions are important right? I know I always do the quick check for food in my teeth and mascara smudges before I meet anyone. One thing I hadn't considered before now: my hair. But when you think about it, you can tell a lot about a person by their hairstyle, at least according to this quiz.

Does the term "face peel" freak you out a little bit? Me too. I have visions of my entire face peeling off in one big piece, like a snake shedding it's skin (sorry if that was TMI). This image has kept me from trying peels, whether they're from an esthetician or the at-home variety, but I think it's time for that to change.

You know how I know it's winter? It's not the temperature dropping or snow falling on the ground (fat chance of that in Los Angeles). No, instead it's when I get my first dry, cracked knuckle that I know the season has changed.
