Fashion Week Makeup Lesson: Rebecca Taylor
- Posted by emilykatewarren on September 12, 2008 at 09:44AM
It's the end of Fashion Week and I am zonked. Ironically, I've spent the whole week making women look beautiful but as a result, my looks have gone straight down the toilet (read: puffy, red eyes, two pimples and dry lips)! Alas, I'll spare you a photo of myself and instead tell you about the most wearable look of all the shows I've worked on this week -- the no-makeup makeup at Rebecca Taylor.
Today's MAC-sponsored show was led by the beautiful Polly Osmond. I think she really captured the essence of what Rebecca Taylor wanted the models to look like underneath her beautiful designs. Polly opted for an imperfect brown, hazy eye, almost bare skin and muted lips. The whole look literally took five minutes for her to demonstrate. She started by scribbling on the model's lids with MAC Eye Kohl in Teddy -- a color that's wearable for skin from the palest of pale to the darkest of dark.
Then she used her finger to blend the eyeliner, leaving the top edges slightly jagged as if the model herself did it in less than 20 seconds. She lined along the lower lashes and smudged that as well. The finishing touch was a swipe of clear gloss on the lids and underneath so the color turned into a hazy wash of brown. (Side note: I'm calling it now. The trend for spring is glossy lids. I've glossed the lids at three separate shows!) A quick coat of mascara and a touch of concealer on the lips -- the end!
It's a look we can all do with ease since it's made to look kind of messy anyway. And it can be worn with a T-shirt and shorts or an evening gown. It's simple but very beautiful. I have to admit the hair really completed the look. Here's a photo of one of my models, Vica. I'm calling the look "flower-child chic." What do you think?
Oh, I almost forgot to mention ... a great way to make your skin look perfectly natural is to use a fluffy blush or powder brush to apply a liquid foundation all over your face. I've recently gotten into using these Japanese brushes -- they're amazing! Brushes like these will feather the makeup onto your skin rather than slathering on a hefty layer.
I hope this week you've gathered up the gusto to try a taste of Fashion Week in your own homes. I encourage you to invite the girls over and try to recreate any (or all!) of these looks. My advice for trying this at home? Don't think too much -- just do it! After all, it is only makeup and heck, if you don't like it, you can wipe it right off!
Xoxo,
Emily
