Free, Full-Body Skin Cancer Screenings

Yours truly is truly the skin cancer poster child:
Fair skin -- check
A history of sunburns -- check
Living in a sunny or high-altitude climate -- check
Moles -- check
A family history of skin cancer -- check
That said, I am no stranger to seeing my dermatologist biannually (find out the 11 questions you should ask your derm), getting moles biopsied, wearing SPF daily, and enjoying the beach in a very shady way.
And when the Skin Cancer Foundations Road to Healthy Skin Tourpresented by Aveeno and Rite Aid was in Los Angeles last week, I jumped at the chance to get my skin checked out. This tour includes over 80 stops across the country to educate people about the importance of sun protection on a daily basis and visiting your dermatologists regularly to get a skin cancer screening. The 38-foot RV (that totally looks like a mini doctor's office inside) offers free, full-body skin cancer screenings to the public by a local dermatologist, which is awesome for those who don't have health insurance or have never gotten around to making an appointment with their derm.
During last years tour, The Skin Cancer Foundation found over 1,200 suspected skin cancers (take this quiz to see if that funny looking mole of yours might be cancer) and precancers, including 77 suspected cases of melanoma. And so far in the 2010 tour, they've found the following suspicious markings:
Melanoma: 59
Actinic Keratosis: 732
Basal Cell Carcinoma: 322
Squamous Cell Carcinoma: 131
Unsurprisingly, Margaret Olsen, MD, the derm who checked out my skin, told me that I'm at high risk for skin cancer (which isn't news to me), but she gave me a great tip: Check out my body once a month on my birth-day. So, I'm going to be doing a personal scan of my skin on the 18th each month since my b-day is November 18. Wish me luck.
BTW, the tour hits Santa Barbara this Thursday and will be doing screenings throughout the country until Oct. 1 -- so check to see when/if it's hitting your town. Bonus: You'll get a free Aveeno Continous Protection Sunblock Lotion sample.
