Rick Farber, Hair Stylist:
We're going to do a quick up-do inspired by Gwen Stefani's many red carpet hairstyles.
We're going to start off sectioning her hair out because we're going to save that for later. We're just going to start with all the length down here and we're going to do a real quick back combing for some stability and volume. Leaving out the front sections as we're going to smooth those over the hair, you don't want to rough that up too much. You want to be able to take this and make it nice and neat, so we'll stop there.
Now we got that done and we start smoothing the hairstyle, brushing against that and putting the other side out of the way, clip it if you have to. When you've got it smooth you want to hit it with a little spray, comb those loose edges over. And then just take and twist that all down. Taking long roller pins, put the longest bobby pins you have and start placing them in. it doesn't matter if they show, at this point, the hairstyle is just about locking the hair down. Then we're going to take the ends of that piece and pull it up out of the way for later. And this one you take and lay over the pins and pull up, securing it with a couple more bobby pins, but these you hide way down inside. Now you take the ends and drop them back out of the way. You'll work on the top section that we had sectioned off. For this, it's very dramatic, so you want a lot of lift on this look. You're going to hit this section with some hairspray and just backcomb it down. And you're going to be fairly aggressive with this, cause you want some movement, you want some volume.
Now you're going to start taking these loose pieces and just start brushing and moving and as you do you hit them with spray. Press them back and pin them. Once you get your shape, you just keep sealing it with the spray.
Okay for our final step in this hairstyle creation, we're just going to take this shape and secure it at the base. You can leave it free, but she's got a lot of hair, so we're just going to take a pin and push it up inside there and then take another one and cross it on the same spot and just lock that down, so she's got that same soft shape but its got a little stability and hold. Hit it with a final shot of hairspray. She's not too stiff, she's still flexible and she's ready for her final look!
