Expert Q&A: Your Summer Makeup Questions -- Answered
Posted 07/01/11 at 06:21AM by Audrey Fine
This month's Expert Q&A comes to us courtesy of celeb makeup artist Chantal Moore, who's worked with such Hollywood beauties as Jennifer Garner and Kristen Bell. Today, Moore answers four reader questions on topics we receive with remarkable frequency. Hopefully some of your concerns will be addressed...
Q: What's the best way to keep my makeup from melting in the heat? -- Cathy, Hamel, Minn.
A: One key to keeping a sweaty face from ruining your makeup is to prime with a mattifier that is specifically formulated to control oil production and shine. "An oil-control mattifier will hold your makeup in place," says Moore. (Try Murad Oil-Control Mattifier, $39.50. Bonus: It'll control meltdowns and has SPF 15.)
Q: I love wearing it in summer when I'm at the pool or beach but, is waterproof mascara bad for my eyelashes? I feel like I'm yanking them out whenever I remove it. -- Mary Jane, Palo Alto, Calif.
A:Waterproof mascara isn't bad for your eyelashes. The key, says Moore, "is to be extra gentle when it's time to remove it. You want to rub the eye area as little as possible." The best plan of attack is to "find an effective, gentle, waterproof-removing formula and saturate soft cotton pads with it." Then, "place a pad on the eyelid and press gently onto the lashes, giving the remover time to work in and dissolve the mascara. Gently move the pad over the lash area until it comes away clean." Don't yank! (Try Benefit Remove It Makeup Remover, $21. It is oil free and goes to work instantly.)
Q: What's the hottest lip shade this season? -- Hilary, Wake Forrest, Ill.
A: "A bright pink lip always flatters the skin and compliments a summer glow," says Moore, who recommends CoverGirl LipPerfection Lip Color in Siren, $6.99, because it "gives you a pop of color and silky smooth, moisture-drenched lips."
Q: Is there a steadfast rule of thumb when it comes to picking a shade of eyebrow pencil? And, do you prefer pencils or powders? -- Alicia, Chappaqua, N.Y.
A: "For the most natural look, stick with a shade that matches your natural eyebrow color or go a shade lighter," says Moore, who also recommends powder over pencil. "Brow powder will have better staying power than a pencil and will appear softer and more natural. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo, $22.50, comes with two complimentary shades and is smudge proof."

Primers are a must in the summer. I also think a good finishing powder can help too!

I really want to find a good primer to help with oil control. $40 just seems like a lot if I'm not sure it's going to work.
