The 18 year-old Filipina singing sensation had Botox injections in her face and Thermage done prior to going before the 'Glee' cameras.
Forget Typical Teen Skin Care, Charice Pempengo Got Botox for her Stint on 'Glee'
Pempengo's publicist Liz Rosenberg (who was with Madonna from the very beginning) sent an email statement on Monday saying that the Botox was "absolutely not cosmetic" but had been sought as a way to alleviate jaw pain that resulted from her chewing too much gum.
"You chew gum and it turns out to be a favorite super-exercise for these muscles, your chewing muscles. So we will show you, this muscle here it's a bit protruding," Belo explained as she examined Pempengo's face while the cameras rolled. "It's like a ball, so we are going to Botox that in order to get it flat so she will have a cuter face ... we want to give you the apple cheek look because it's cute, right?"
For her part, Pempengo, who typically goes by her first name only, said in the interview that aired with the video of the procedure that she'd done it to help get ready for her upcoming role on the Fox hit, "Glee" but doesn't address the whole face shape changing angle which may spark some controversy. Perhaps to offset any backlash, however, she added that she's "very proud to be an Asian, very proud to be Filipino."
On June 21, the long circulating rumors that Charice would appear on the Emmy-nominated show were confirmed. She will play a foreign exchange student whose incredible talent just might drive Rachel (Lea Michelle) over the edge. "All people will be anticipating how will Charice look? Is she good enough to pit against Rachel Berry? So of course there is tremendous pressure," she said.
Pempengo, a sensation in her native Philipines, was discovered on YouTube (much like fellow Filipino-turned-Journey-lead-singer, Arnel Pineda), but stateside, appearances on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show" -- where Oprah deemed her the "Most Talented Girl in the World" -- set her career ablaze. (It didn't hurt that Winfrey also paired her up with music genius David Foster.)
