"Black Swan," the movie from which the stills were taken, is about a ballerina (Portman) who vies for the lead in Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" against another up and coming dancer played by Mila Kunis. And, as the imdb.com summary reveals: "Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side - a recklessness that threatens to destroy her."
Portman, who's been dating ballet dancer Benjamin Millipied (who choreographed the movie) since last year, studied ballet from the age of 4 through 13 and has been in talks with the director, Darren Aronofsky ("The Wrestler") for nearly ten years about making this film. And, while a decade is a long time to let a project percolate (even by Hollywood standards), as Portman recently explained in an interview, it's not necessarily a bad thing. "The character was very interesting to play, always challenging and surprising. The fact that I had spent so much time with the idea -- Darren and I started discussing doing the film in 2000 -- allowed it to marinate a little before we shot."
The stunning costume seen here is one of 40 that was designed by Laura and Kate Mulleavy for Rodarte - the fashion house's first foray into feature films. And the incredibly-stylized makeup look seems to be almost samurai-inpsired.
And, while the rationale behind the striking look has yet to be explained, it's certainly doing a lot to drum up interest in this indie production that will kick off the Venice Film Festival in September with an eye to a U.S. release later in the fall.
What do you think of her makeup look? Are you intrigued enough to see the movie? Think a lot of girls will copy the eye for Halloween this year?
