Rick Farber, Hair Stylist:
Hi, I'm Rick Farber and today we are going to do a more edgy, kind of runway look on this model. It's inspired by celebrity hairstyles like Beyonce. We are going to do very tight curls on her, bring it all forward and give it a lot of volume. So let's go ahead and get started.
So we are going to start off taking really small sections back here because we are doing tight curls. Pin this hair out of the way so we have a good clean space to work in. OK, we are going to take a very small section and separate that off from the rest. You want to start with the iron as close into the scalp as you can and you want to wind that up tight and just slide down. Hold that in there, you don't need to worry about the ends so much for celebrity hairstyles like this one. We are going to leave those a little bit straight. Remember the size of this section is important for this. While I work back here I want more volume, so I'm going to alternate these. You can go any direction you want. Right when we get to the face we'll go one direction. For right now we are just going to get this a lot of body. I am just going to keep doing the same pattern all the way up. Just rows across and alternate back and forth to get as much volume as I can until we get to the front.
We have put in a lot of our groundwork, not really something you want to do yourself if you're not experienced with an iron. This is a little more labor intensive. Maybe you have a girlfriend that's good at it, she can help you with the back. It's the kind of thing that's going to take you a little time.
You want to take the small sections now. We get up into the longer hair as we get up towards the front, especially. You take small sections and you wind it, wind it, and wind it, like a coil straight around the iron. Use the smallest iron you can find. The smaller, the tighter the curl. You hold it, heat and drop it out. Place this in close to the scalp and wind it just like a spool. Get the ends as close as you can but a little bit out because you want that edgy, not-quite-finished look for celebrity hairstyles like this one.
Now in these you'll see I'm going to wind them a little differently. It's much shorter hair and I want to direct it all forward. So, I'm going to take these little small sections and I'm going to put my iron in traditionally. Roll it towards the face and just wind. Keep feeding the ends in all the way. Try and move as quickly as you can and just get everything wound in. I am kind of doing it on a diagonal, slice section so that I get these pieces flowing off of her part.
Now, I'm just breaking her curls up because they're so, so tight, which we wanted but we want to break them now and put a little polishing cream on, separate them and start placing them. So, I just run my fingers over all of it. Gives it a nice shine and a lot of separation.
OK, so we've got the shape in. We have created the form and we are just going to give her a light spray with a shine mist to give it a really polished, finished, shiny look. And she's ready -- beautiful.

Nice hair style, would also look good pined up with a few curls hanging around her face and on her neck.

My hair is too long and thick to do this. It would take way too much time.

I didn't really love Beyonce's look--it seemed too frizzy. And this would take way too long for me to do on my hair!

This is how my curls used to look when I was in highschool. Too bad I didn't know then that curls were an "edgy" look! lol I could've saved my hair from years of damage from straighteners/blow-dryers!! That was definitely the smallest curling iron I think I've ever seen. And I definitely think it took this guy at least an hour to achieve this look. If you have longer hair it would probably take 2 or 3 hours! Reminds me of the old days when I would go get my hair blown-out and be at my hair dresser's for 3 hours. lol that poor lady...thank God for straightening irons!!
