Get Luxe Hair and Makeup Looks for LessWe dared ourselves to recreate celebrity hairstyles and makeup looks that normally cost hundreds of dollars using only drugstore beauty products. Did we succeed? |
Rashida Jones' Hairstyle and Makeup Who tried it: Sarah Carrillo, Senior Associate Editor
Approximate primping time: 10 minutes for hair, 15 minutes for makeup
What she used:
For her hair:
Head & Shoulders Shampoo and Conditioner, $5.99
John Frieda Collection Root Awakening Strength Restoring Smoothing Lotion, $6.49
Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine Glossing Spray, $4.29
Garnier Fructis Style Sleek & Shine Anti-Humidity Hairspray, $4.29
For her makeup:
Neutrogena Skin Clearing Oil-Free Makeup in Golden Ivory, $11.99
Neutrogena Skin Soothing Undereye Corrector in Natural Light, $8.59
CoverGirl Clean Normal Skin Pressed Powder in Classic Beige, $4.98
CoverGirl Cheekers Blush in Rose Silk, $4.50
Wet n Wild Beauty Benefits Dual Effects Eye Pencil in Solar Eclipse, $5
Maybelline Eye Studio Color Pearls Marbleized Eyeshadow in Carbon Frost, $7
CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion Mascara, $9.99
CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain in Everbloom Kiss, $7
Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Coral Cream, $5.54
CoverGirl Wetslicks Amazemint Lip Gloss in Freedom of Peach, $4.99
Her thoughts: While I'd never normally be this dressy at the office, I do really like this look. It was also pretty easy. For my hair, I just applied the smoothing cream and blow dried with a paddle brush (I didn't worry about getting it too straight since it was going in a bun anyway). Then I sprayed the shine spray into my hands and smoothed it over my hair (the bottle recommended this for fine hair, which mine definitely is). Then I ran my bangs through the flat iron, put my hair into a low ponytail, loosely braided it and wrapped it around the base and pinned into place.
My makeup was a little more involved, but still didn't take very long. I did my usual foundation and concealer, then lined my eyes with black pencil and followed up with black powder shadow. I lined my lower inner rims too -- which normally totally creeps me out -- and I think it was a nice touch. Then I used the pinky-peach side of the Maybelline palette for my lids and swiped on some blush.
My lips took a little experimenting to get close to Rashida's color. I used the CoverGirl stain, but it was a little dark, so I lightened it with the lipstick and gloss. What I learned: when in doubt, just keep layering, removing and playing until you're happy with it. After all, it's just makeup.

None of them turned out better or close to the celebrity look.

Unfortunately, it looks like this project was too hard to execute. Nothing looks like the "celebrity" photos. This looks more like an experiment in 'interpretation' and not 'replication'. I do appreciate that staff took the time to attempt the looks.

Using the cosmetics the celebs use will NOT make us look like them. Good color matching in most of the comparison photos.

Some people copied the celebrity look right, but a few did not get it right.

This was fun! Even if it wasn't using drugstore products, it was nice to see celebrity hair and makeup translated into real life looks!
