9 Gluten-Free Makeup and Beauty BrandsAllergic to wheat? You may have to give up entire food groups, but you don't have to give up your beauty products |
When you're Paleo or celiac beauty junkie, sure, you care a ton about just how much length your mascara gives you, but you also worry about whether your makeup is gluten-free. According to the Gluten Intolerance Group, an estimated one in 133 people in the U.S. have celiac disease, requiring those individuals to stay gluten-free -- in all aspects.
Traditionally, gluten sensitivities were an issue when it came to diet only, but for some, the sensitivity has them cutting out more than just pasta and bread. "The main concern for those who are gluten intolerant has to do with the oral ingestion of makeup products," says Whitney Bowe, MD, a New York-based dermatologist and assistant medical director of Laser & Cosmetic Services at Advanced Dermatology. "While it varies from person to person, some people are extremely sensitive to gluten and can see a reaction from the smallest ingestion of gluten particles, such as those found in lipstick or toothpaste."
While some scoff at the gluten-free beauty trend as being just another marketing scheme, Bowe says there are legitimate reasons for the gluten-intolerant to use gluten-free makeup. However, products with gluten are not as detrimental as they're made out to be. "Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin, so lotions and shampoos are most likely not going to have any negative effects," Bowe says. Lip balms and lipsticks, however, are a different story. "Those can be ingested, react with the gut and create symptoms for the gluten-intolerant.," she explains.
Still, it's all about what you're comfortable with. While you should always read the labels of your beauty products carefully, we admit they're not always easy to navigate. To take away the guesswork, we sought out the beauty and makeup brands that are 100 percent gluten-free, and completely safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities. The best part? Many of the brands are also free of parabens and toxins, certified organic and do not test on animals. While you may have to compromise your diet, you shouldn't have to compromise your beauty routine. Here are the 9 gluten-free makeup brands you definitely want to check out.
