These 9 CBD Oil Products Might Just Change Your LifeThis totally legal form of weed could be the salve your body needs |
Before you even ask: No, CBD (short for cannabidiol) will not get you high. It's lacking in the psychoactive effects of its 420-friendly cousin, THC. But some evidence suggests the plant compound found in hemp and marijuana, two varieties of the cannabis plant, may ease pain, anxiety, sleepiness, inflammation, nausea, and, in the right dose from a doctor and in combination with other medicinal compounds found in the cannabis plant, may even treat everything from seizures to withdrawal.
According to Bonni Goldstein, MD, a former pediatric emergency physician turned medical director of CannaCenters and medical advisor of Weedmaps.com, CBD is most effective for treating serious medical issues when combined with THC and derived from a marijuana plant rather than hemp stalks. Unfortunately, non-hemp stalk derived CBD is still considered a Class I illegal substance by the federal government, and isn't available in most states. But with the gradual decriminalization of marijuana, weed-based products are more prevalent than ever. To date, 29 states have approved marijuana for medical or recreational use. And CBD by itself is legal in all 50 states, as long as the accompanying THC is less than .3 percent.
Goldstein, having tested many of the products her patients bought on the internet herself, warns that many CBD products sold on the internet are often produced from poor-quality hemp. As a physician, Goldstein can't endorse specific cannabis products, especially without having tested them. Instead, she recommends buying products only from companies that provide analytical testing results that include the profile of phytocannabinoids and terpenoids, and contaminant/microbial, pesticide and solvent levels.
Biochemist Samantha Miller, founder of Pure Analytics, a cannabis safety and potency testing lab and chief scientific officer at Hmbldt, says that she's heard from some patients who swear by hemp-derived CBD as the only thing that works for them — and she's also heard the opposite. "A given patient or disease can have totally different responses to the same type of cannabis due to the chemical complexity and sheer number of active ingredients present," says Miller.
As the stigma of marijuana-based treatments slowly fades, we'll see a lot more CBD products coming down the pipeline — Miller says that one former CEO of a major cosmetics company predicted 80 percent of cosmetic ingredients would have a botanical origin within the next 10 years. If you're looking to use CBD for a serious medical issue, see a doctor or only buy from companies that provide testing results. But if you're just looking to dip your toes into the weed waters, here are a few (tie-dye- and patchouli-free) options.
