Can You Really Use Charcoal to Brighten Your Teeth? One of the most popular skin care ingredients is now crossing over into oral care. |
What Is Activated Charcoal? Before we get into the nitty-gritty of brushing your teeth with charcoal, allow us to explain what it actually is. Activated charcoal is a fine black powder that can be made from stuff like coconut shells or olive pits. It becomes activated when it's heated at very high temperatures. Activated charcoal binds to toxins and prevents them from absorbing, which is why it's most commonly used for drug overdoses. It makes sense, though, that beauty brands have incorporated this ingredient into their products, since drawing out toxins from the skin, hair and teeth sounds like it could potentially have some serious benefits.
