14 Things You Should Know Before Getting a Perm

Olivia Mun got one. Jaime King got her first one since third grade. Lola Kirke got one. Emma Stone got one with a friend. We're talking about perms, of course, and they're having a moment. 

Makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, Emma's perming partner, confirmed this on Instagram, proclaiming, "We’re here to tell you that [perms] are BACK and they're not your grandma's perm!" Given that it has been decades since the glory days of 1970s and 1980s gravity-defying perms, there have been a lot of advances with techniques, formulations and styles. Whether you lived through the first wave (sorry) of big hair or not, it's important to get updated with the perms of today before you get one. Because this is a chemical treatment, it's not something that can be changed easily so you'll want to know as much as possible.
