The Pantone Project Challenges the Way We See Skin Color

Artist Angela Dass hopes to create a new way to reclassify skin tone
Photographer Angelica Dass wanted us to rethink how we conceive of skin color -- it's a uniquely personal, individual thing that we tend to have too few words to describe. Her Humanae project aims to highlight the "our true colors, rather than the untrue Red and Yellow, Black and White." For the project, Dass used models from around the world, and, after photographing each model, matched the photo background to each person's skin tone.

Dass hopes the project will generate discussion around how we think about ethnic identity and race, and perhaps create a new way of identifying ourselves, "independent from such factors as nationality, origin, economic status, age or aesthetic standards." [Bellasugar]
