Someone recently asked me for the secret to balancing work and family. Man, do I wish I could answer that one! It's a loaded question, and, unfortunately, I don't think there is a secret.
For me, it's about committing to being present wherever I am. When I'm at home, I try not to think about work. And when I'm at work, I try not to get distracted by what's going on at home. (The latter is definitely harder.) Since having a baby, I'm more aware about whether the amount of time I spend at work is time well-spent. But I try to look at the benefits. I feel very lucky that I enjoy my work, and it keeps me creatively engaged and inspired -- and that makes me a better mom and wife.
I know being present isn't a simple trick to master. But, just like in meditation, when my mind starts to wander, I gently guide it back. Next time you're feeling unfocused, try this breathing technique: Breathe in for eight seconds, hold it for eight seconds, breathe out for eight seconds and hold it for eight seconds. Do that eight times, and you should feel more centered.
And if you discover the secret to work-life balance in the process, leave your tip in the comments section and enlighten me.
