Christian Louboutin, noted shoe designer extraordinaire, set women's hearts aflutter when he announced that his
Christian Louboutin Beauté makeup line would launch later this year.
But today we're not so in love with the creator of the red sole. In an otherwise charming interview with
WWD, Louboutin went off the deep end on the topic of beauty -- specifically natural beauty:
"Being natural is like being unsophisticated ... 'Natural' shouldn't be no makeup, roots, being in a pajama all year long. Thank God, culture has elevated people more than that."
In his defense, Louboutin was attempting to challenge the myth that pretty women who wear makeup and care about fashion are stupid:
"Tell me why a woman who likes to put on heels and who cleans her hair is a stupid woman?"
He veers somewhere into a
feminist stance by citing one of his beauty idols, Nefertiti.
"So many women in history, women who made history, they didn't have to look like bad versions of men. For me, beauty has been there for 5,000 years. It's Nefertiti. If you see the bust of Nefertiti, it's one of the most beautiful faces, an incredible beauty. And if you look at her, there's nothing natural."
As women who regularly roll out of the house makeup-free, we take issue with Louboutin's assertion that "au naturel" is unsophisticated -- after all, Elle's editor-in-chief goes bare
without makeup. But in his roundabout way, he's praising women who can be successful and intelligent by being feminine, rather than trying to act like men to make it in a man's world.
What do you think about Louboutin's dramatic statements? Way off base, or pro-woman?
