Does it seem like every other week you hear about a new "superfood"? While some of them are merely fads with little actual health benefits, there are plenty of others that live up to their "super" name.

So what makes these foods so amazing? Liz Weinandy, MPH, RD, LD, outpatient dietitian at OSU Wexner Medical Center's Department of Nutrition Services, explains: "You're looking at foods that are super high in nutrients along with antioxidants and/or phytochemicals (chemical compounds that naturally occur in plants) that are not readily found in our food supply." She says many of these have been found to lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, and even slow signs of aging. To reap the benefits, stock your fridge with the foods on this expert-approved superfoods list now.

Black raspberry
While blueberries get a lot of fanfare for their nutritional value, Weinandy says the black raspberry is actually where it's at. "They are a great source of a chemical only found in plants called anthocyanins, which has anti-cancer properties. Lab research on mice show anthocyanins prevent tumors from growing, and may actually slow down tumor growth or even kill tumor cells, especially with cancer of the esophagus, stomach, and skin," she says. The only problem with black raspberries is they're hard to find, but luckily they're in season now.

Yogurt
Yogurt is a good source of probiotics, which Weinandy says feed the good bacteria in your gut. "A lot of people don't realize that we literally have pounds of bacteria in our gastrointestinal tracks. That bacteria is important for our bodies and immune system to function," she says. And the best way to keep the bacteria in our intestines working optimally is to consume fermented products, like kimchi, sauerkraut, or yogurt.

When choosing your yogurt, make sure the label says, "contains active cultures," which is referring to its probiotic content. And "if you have any blood sugar problems, be careful with the yogurts with a lot of added sugar." Greek yogurt is extremely popular because it has low sugar content and is high in protein. Try Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt, which has 12g of protein and 0 percent fat. Plus it comes in four fun flavors.

Chia seeds
"More cooks across the country are trying to incorporate chia seeds into people's diets, because they're a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and fiber," says Weinandy. Fatty acids are crucial for proper brain, eye, and nervous system function and may help with heart disease and diabetes, since omega-3s are responsible for reducing inflammation in the body. If that doesn't convince you to load up on chia seeds, than how about appealing to your vanity? Fatty acids help maintain a youthful complexion by keeping skin hydrated and promoting collagen production. If you don't like chia seeds, another great source of omega-3 fatty acids is fish, like salmon and sardines.

Olive oil
While Americans don't get enough omega-3s, Weinandy says we over-consume omega-6s, a type of fat that's in all vegetable oils. "In the U.S., we use a ton of soybean and corn oils when cooking, since they're the cheapest and most readily available," says Weinandy. But she adds that we're better off reducing our omega-6 consumption, and recommends swapping corn-based oil for olive oil, which is one of the oils with the lowest omega-6 levels. Having an unbalanced ratio between the two fatty acids may promote cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory diseases.
