To start, spray your roots with a volumizing product.

Next, smooth the front and top portion of your hair using a blow dryer and medium-sized round brush -- the heat will work with the volumizing spray to add lift to your hair. Before pinning your hair back, backcomb the crown of your head (just a bit) to add additional volume. Backcombing refresher: take a one-inch section and hold it up, then place a fine-toothed comb or brush into it from the top and push down, pull it out, and repeat. Then smooth out the top layer gently.

Last, grab a section of hair from each side of your head, above your ears, and pull them back (leave bangs or a few face framing layers hanging in front). Then secure the two sections to the back of your head with two bobby pins -- crisscross them so they stay in place.

Get romantic with flowers
An instant way to add a feminine, dressy touch to your hair for a night out is by pinning flowers in it as Keri Russell shows here. Luckily, they don't have to be real flowers, a floral hair accessory will suffice.

You don't have to have curls to mimic Russell's look, but your hair should have some texture. Get it by applying a scrunching mousse like Sebastian Professionals Whipped Creme, $17.99 through your strands before blow drying it with a diffuser to bring out any natural wave or curl you may have.

Last, secure your hair into a loose, low side ponytail. But before you pull it all the way through the last loop of your hair elastic, stop it halfway, so it looks like a bun, or pouf. If you have long layers falling out of the loop, secure them into it with bobby pins, but don't worry too much -- it's not meant to look perfect.

To complete your style, simply clip your floral accessory (or fresh flowers) over the elastic to hide it. Then lock your look in place by spraying it with an extra-hold hairspray like.
