Keep it dirty
It seems counterintuitive, but shampooing your hair every day causes hair color to fade. And water dries out your hair's natural oils, which are necessary for hair's sheen. Try just washing your hair every other day or, even better, two to three times a week. Can't deal with oily hair? Use dry shampoo, which eliminates excess oil and keeps hair clean.
When you do shampoo and condition your hair, do a final rinse with cool water for 30 to 45 seconds. The cold water will close your hair's cuticles, helping to seal in the moisture your hair just got from the conditioner.
Using any kind of heat styling tool puts stress on your hair, says celebrity colorist Billy Lowe. "Applying heat leads to breakage, which causes color to fade more quickly," says Lowe. If you must break out the hot tools, make sure to use a heat-protectant spray on your hair before styling -- and use tools that feature ion or ceramic technologies, which are more forgiving on hair. Try to let your hair dry naturally and if you must blow dry your hair, use the "cool" button.

Beauty isn't only skin deep
Your skin and your hair's health are affected by what goes into your body -- which means we're talking about your diet. Consuming all of the recommended daily vitamins and nutrients is essential for shiny, healthy hair in addition to your overall health. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon and walnuts) are crucial for glossy hair; dark leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, also help contribute to your hair's sheen. Editor's tip: If you want your hair to grow quickly, take biotin supplements, which help speed hair growth.
