Want to get La Prairie perfect skin at an Olay price? You can! Looking beautiful doesn't always have to come at an extreme price -- if you know which products to look for in the beauty aisle. That's why we teamed up with Procter & Gamble Senior Scientist, Frauke Neuser, and makeup artist for N.Y.C. New York Color, Mathew Nigara, to find out which affordable products offer similar benefits to more expensive brands -- just in time for spring!
While $60 might seem like a lot of cash to shell out for an anti-aging kit (though keeping wrinkles away should be worth any price, right?), it's actually a great deal for what you get in the Olay Starter Kit. It includes the line's Age Repair Lotion SPF 30, Wrinkle Smoothing Cream, and the Eye Restoration Complex -- a true steal when compared to the $275 you would shell out for the ultra-fab, but pricey La Prairie Collection. Both brands claim to repair skin at the cellular level to slow wrinkle formation and help skin retain its elasticity -- it's just up to you, what you're willing to pay.
Every woman needs a perfect, go-to lipstick color and luckily, finding the right one doesn't mean you have to spend a ton of cash. "Lip color is all about color choice and texture preference. The more expensive brands tend to have a lot of fragrance in them," says Nigara. "This causes the lips to peel on a lot of women." So while we love the deep pigments (and SPF) in the YSL rouge, we don't love the strong fragrance or the $34 price tag. If you're looking to save cash, it makes sense to try the Maybelline lipstick. For $6 a pop, you can try several of the 48 richly-pigmented subtly scented shades, including a perfect-for-spring bright pink.
Thinking of changing up your hair color for the spring? Why not do it in the comfort of your home? "All permanent colorants, whether drugstore, department store or salon, use the same or very similar technology components," says Neuser. However, each product is designed for a very different consumer, so while they all color hair, the experience and results can differ." For example the Clairol product applicator is "designed for easy, drip-free and even coverage," she says, while the Fekkai box "includes a more salon-inspired brush and bowl system. So your choice comes down to how much you want to spend and how you want to apply your product. If you're not an experienced at-home colorist, we recommend going with a more fool-proof application system like you'll find in most beauty aisle hair color boxes.
The one must-have item for spring and summer is an SPF product that will protect your skin from harmful UV rays, but not feel gunky under makeup. The new Neutrogena product has a high SPF factor, is super lightweight, and doesn't feel greasy on the face. It's very similar to Chanel's UV blocker, but at a price that is $39 less.
