Florida-born Ashley, 22, is committed to keeping her beachy blonde color while she finishes her senior year at Marymount Manhattan in New York City. But her hectic schedule and limited finances make it difficult for her to get to the salon regularly for root touch-ups.
"I know, it's awful, I have six inches of roots," she says. "I don't mean for it to get this bad, but I can't seem to help it." So to remedy the situation, we called in our dream team of experts from the Marie Robinson salon in New York City. See how they transformed Ashley's damaged, grown-out hair into a manageable, pretty style.

Why Ashley loves her blonde "roots"
"Whatever cut I once had is gone," says Ashley. "And it doesn't help that I straighten my hair all the time so my ends just break off." As for the color, she loves being blonde but wishes it wasn't so hard to maintain. "This color makes me feel like I'm still in my sunny home state when I'm in the northeast -- I don't want to give it up."

The Color
Colorist Keith Shore admits that Ashley's roots and damage make coloring a challenge. "Since she's trying to grow out her hair, ideally Ashley should move away from over-processing it," he says. "Right now her hair is a bit ashy, so we'll bring more warmth to her color palette." To do this, Shore gives her gentle face-framing highlights and softens the overall color. In order to avoid further damaging her ends, Shore is careful to concentrate the color on her crown.

The Cut
Ashleys previous cut had grown out, leaving her with a flat, lifeless look. Hairstylist Abby Schlenger tries to keep as much length as possible while making Ashley's hair appear healthy. "We want to try and take off the wispy ends to give her clean, polished ends that also have a little bombshell vibe," says Schlenger. "She has quite a bit of damage on her ends so we need to bring her up a couple inches, and then I'll go through and clean up her layers to reinforce her shape. The overall appearance will be much better."

The Style
Schlenger gives Ashley a voluminous blowout that both highlights and tames her natural curls. She first blow dries her hair with a diffuser to give life to her hair's natural curl shape. Schlenger's goal is to create a healthy look and feel without the hair looking overdone. With the use of a large round brush, Schlenger creates a lively, bouncy look, saying, "healthy hair is always the most attractive."
