Nutrition student Jess, 27, has battled with her curls her entire life. She cites her texture as her biggest hair challenge and says that she just wants cool, natural, easy hair at the end of her makeover. We're calling in the experts at the Marie Robinson Salon in New York -- hairstylist Abby Schlenger, colorist Amy Huson, and makeup artist Joette Balsamo -- to see if they can tame Jess's unruly hair.

"Make it manageable."
Jess' biggest hair problem is the texture of her curls, something the stylists seek to control without straightening completely. Because Jess is happy with her current length, the stylists focus on texturizing and coloring her hair rather than taking a lot off the bottom.

The color
Because Jess's natural color is so beautiful, Huson doesn't want to change it too much. "She wants something soft and easy -- natural looking," says Huson. "We're going to go a little bit darker -- a rich, chocolate-y brown." Huson uses a semi-permanent dye that will take Jess's hair two shades darker and add a lot of shine.

The cut
Schlenger compares Jess' hair to that of the Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen because of her beautiful beachy waves. Schlenger's plan is to give Jess choppy layers and a cool Freja-esque fringe. "We want to work with her natural texture," explains Schlenger. "She can wear it messy and wavy some days but it will also be really chic when she wants to blow it out." Schlenger gives Jess short layers around her face and square layers throughout the rest of her hair. She finishes off the look with long bangs.

The style
Schlenger gives Jess a blowout to highlight the new layers, but she twists the hair to maintain some of the natural wave. She suggests that Jess dries her hair with a diffuser at home and pulls on the curls to loosen them into waves. Schlenger makes sure to dry Jess's new bangs separately and then blend them into the look.
