Maureen, a 48-year-old schoolteacher, is in need of a good haircut, but she's also in the middle of trying to grow it out, which she says is especially difficult because her hair is so thin. So we're calling in the experts at the Marie Robinson Salon in New York City -- which include hairstylist Frederique Carme, colorist Amy Huson, and makeup artist Joette Balsamo -- to see if they can give her the cut she needs while maintaining the length she wants.

"Let's keep it simple."
Maureen's two biggest challenges are her grays and the thinness of her hair. Her hope is that the stylists and colorists can give her a cut and color that don't require a ton of maintenance, but still solve her hair problems.

The color
Huson decides not to do a full single process color on Maureen. Instead, she adds highlights to blend and camouflage the gray hairs, making maintenance easier when it grows out. Huson paints in the piecey highlights, which will give Maureen a diffused -- rather than solid -- line when gray roots start to appear.

The cut
Carme is sensitive to Maureen's plan to grow out her hair. In order to keep things looking fresh and clean while also maintaining most of the length, Carme gives Maureen an angled bob. "I'm keeping the length in the front and shortening the back," explains Carme. "This way she will have more volume in the back." Plus, the new cut will grow out well, and a fresh trim should jumpstart the process.

The style
With an angled bob, volume is key to keeping the hair from looking flat and lifeless. Carme gives Maureen a blowout with face-framing pieces in the front and bouncy layers in the back. Carme suggests that Maureen gets a tiny trim every eight weeks to keep the angle pronounced and help fend off breakage.
