For Sue, 57, an oncology nurse, having a functional hairstyle is paramount. With the summer nearing, it's important for her to keep enough length to throw her hair up into a ponytail. But at the same time, she wants to do something to manage its thickness and liven up the dull color. We called in hairstylist Frederique Carme, colorist Keith Shore, and makeup artist Joette Balsamo -- from the Marie Robinson salon in New York City -- to help get her hair under control before the first heat wave.

'Help me lighten up!'
"I like the length, the color is alright, but the thickness is the real problem," says Sue. "I have a lot of hair -- so I usually end up getting a keratin treatment to calm it down." While she contemplated going red, Sue decides to stick with her blonde color. "But I want something new and bright," she says.

The Color
"One thing I noticed -- we both noticed -- is that what Sue has is basically a one-tone, one-note color," says Shore. "We want to bring some dimension and contrast to the hair so it looks like it has more movement." To do this, Shore gives Sue both high and low lights with an overall golden hue. He adds, "she has some grays so we're going to cover those. And we're going to knock her base color down just a little bit so that there's more depth to it -- right now it's too translucent."

The Cut
Carme understands the importance of maintaining a well-kept yet functional look for Sue. "She doesn't want to go too short because she has a lot of hair -- it would be too thick," says Carme. "I'm going to clean up the length a bit and reshape all of the layers." The subtle change gives Sue's hair an overall healthier appearance.

The Style
Carme gives Sue a full blowout that emphasizes the new layers. Using a large round brush, Carme blow dries her hair in one-inch sections. To retain as much body and movement as possible, Carme holds each section of hair around the round brush for a few seconds to let it cool before releasing. This allows a natural curl to take shape.
