While "space punk" appeared to be a red carpet theme, these artists all brought their individual style to MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards (case in point: Lady Gaga). Here, we present our most crave-worthy (and cringe-worthy) picks for hair and makeup.

Best Red Lips: Taylor Swift
As usual, Taylor's classic look and soft, romantic updo could have easily gone down the red carpet at the Oscars. We love that she chose to complement her bright lips (easily do-able with Make Up For Ever Lipstick, $22, in Hollywood Red) with a fine application of eyeliner and glamorous false lashes.

Best Skin: Beyonce
The soulful siren was all aglow from her forehead down to her cleavage, thanks no doubt to a shimmering body lotion (like Burt's Bees Radiance Body Lotion, $9.49) and a highlighting powder (like MAC Mineralize Skinfinish, $27, in Gold Deposit). The result? Stunningly beautiful skin.

Sexiest Hair: Shakira
Va va voom. The Colombian siren's tousled, honey blonde waves were as hot as her dress (too bad Pink wore the same one). We bet her hair was pumped full of volumizer before being blown out Jennifer Aniston-style (like in this video) and curled with a 1-inch curling iron.

Best Smoky Eye: Kristin Cavallari
Ladies, take note! Since smoky eyes dominated the red carpet, it was hard to pick just one great example. Kristin Cavallari's stood out because they were not only perfectly blended but properly set off with a natural lip and a sleek yet sexy ponytail. (Check out this video for three more ways to pull this look off.)
