Va va voom. The Colombian siren's tousled, honey blonde waves were as hot as her dress (too bad Pink wore the same one). We bet her hair was pumped full of volumizer before being blown out Jennifer Aniston-style (like in this video) and curled with a 1-inch curling iron.

Best Smoky Eye: Kristin Cavallari
Ladies, take note! Since smoky eyes dominated the red carpet, it was hard to pick just one great example. Kristin Cavallari's stood out because they were not only perfectly blended but properly set off with a natural lip and a sleek yet sexy ponytail. (Check out this video for three more ways to pull this look off.)

Best Half-Up Do: Madonna
Twilight's Ashley Greene made a noteworthy attempt at a half-up style but we had to give top honors to Madge's classic bouffant. All you need: a blow-dryer and round brush, lots of back-combing and a really good hairspray from L'Oreal.

Best Overall Look: Katy Perry
Katy never fails to be the poster girl for "pretty" with her trademark vintage-inspired makeup and hair. We loved the silver eye shadow (try Urban Decay's Vapor), which both brightened up her whole face and matched her eventual lip color change from pink to red.

Best Waves: Alessandra Ambrosio
It's no surprise that this Victoria's Secret model wowed us with her natural makeup and gorgeous sun-kissed waves. To get her seemingly effortless look, try VS's "secret" cocktail of mousse throughout damp locks and volumizing spray at the crown, followed by a head full of pin curls. While "space punk" appeared to be a red carpet theme, these artists all brought their individual style to MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards (case in point: Lady Gaga). Here, we present our most crave-worthy (and cringe-worthy) picks for hair and makeup.
