Form: Gradual tan building spray
Tester rating: Good
Review: "I'm not a huge fan of self tanners since I'm so pale, but Coppertone Continuous Sunless Tanning Gradual Spray converted my sun-loving self. The spray was very convenient to use (I could spray my back without worrying about streaking). My favorite part (other than the compliments I got) was how soft the spray made my skin. I didn't look at all orange (except for my palms after I waited too long to wash them) and the smell wasn't noticeable. The color was light, even (despite my not exfoliating), dried in about two minutes and lasted an impressive amount of seven days. I used it every other night and saw the color after the second application. I definitely plan on buying this product again." -- Sarah

Form: Gradual tan building lotion

Review: "While Clinique Self-Sun Touch of Bronze Moisturizing Body Lotion offers a subtle, buildable, bronze color without turning hands excessively dark, I wouldn't dump my Bare Escentuals Faux Tan for it. (The latter offered better color and a more fragrant scent.) It took roughly three applications of the Clinique self tanner produce a significant shade of bronze which lasted about a week. (Note: I wasn't ghostly white to begin with and my skin naturally has a golden tint.) A big benefit was that the tanner dried in less than 10 minutes without streaks or tan lines. While the color looked more natural a Mystic Tan, the chemical smell was unfortunately just as pungent. [Editor's note: The scent is light and lemon-y out of the tube but the DHA creeps up later.] I applied the lotion in the morning, then needed to wear a jacket to mask the rancorous smell while sitting almost shoulder-to-shoulder with classmates at night." -- Mysti

Review: "My olive skin is not too pale to begin with, but I'd use Liz Earle Sunshade Botanical Self-Tan Spray to get me through spring because I like wearing skirts. I exfoliated and moisturized before applying the tanner, which produced noticeably darker color after two applications. I was concerned with doing a third application for fear of becoming more orange. (The color was a bit more orange than bronze; I would have preferred a more golden color on my skin tone.) The fragrance of the product didn't really stand out. And the results were pretty even, though they took about six hours to show up and only lasted two days. I would have liked the liquid formula in an aerosol form rather than a pump spray but I was able to easily rub the product in before it quickly dried. Also, my first goof easily exfoliated away, which was comforting." -- Tiffany

Review: "When I found out that I was testing a self tanner from a company that I had never heard of, I wasn't very excited. But I was surprised to find out how much I loved Nature's Gate Organics Tanagement Self-Tanning Creme. Applied like most creamy self tanners (by hand), the product rubbed in easily and dried in less than 10 minutes. I applied it after showering, exfoliating and shaving, being sure to wash my hands right after I was done. It had a very mild scent that was unnoticeable after a few hours. By the next morning, I was extremely impressed with my new tan. The color was warm and subtle (about two shades darker than my fair skin tone). I couldn't find a single streak and was even more thrilled to find that I didn't have any dark blotches on my palms or feet." -- Aubrey

Form: Aerosol mist
Tester rating: Excellent
Review: "Quick is right! Body Drench Quick Tan Sunless Tanning Mist's tinted formula made it easy to see where to apply, and the color was very natural -- no orange in sight. The coffee-scented mist dried quickly, usually in less than five minutes. The initial color change was dramatic, about three shades darker on fair skin after the first application. Subsequent applications only deepened the tone by about one shade. Tips: Exfoliate before application and either wear gloves or wash hands often during the process [to prevent tan hands]. Also, though the directions advise against it, you may want to rub in lightly to make the application seamless. (The spray is a very intense color and doesn't distribute evenly straight from the can.) The tan maintained its color with a reapplication every two days and lasted at least five days with no further applications." -- Mandy
