"Skin is definitely where a trend starts, so when it comes to fall, kick it off with a modern matte base," Miller says. A simple dusting of translucent powder like M·A·C Mineralize Skinfinish Natural ($24.50, maccosmetics.com) will give your face a polished, matte finish. When layered over the cream blush from your daytime look, it creates the appearance of a subtle, under-the-skin flush.

Smoke-ify your eyes
The look is about a metallic, dark gray eye -- heavy on the liner -- for nighttime. "Even with these dark shades, metallic textures give it a light feeling," says Nars makeup artist James Boehmer. Create dimension and depth by layering a gray shadow like Bourjois Ombre a Paupières Eyeshadow in Gris Delicat (14) ($14, sephora.com) on top of the bronze shadow you used in the a.m., Miller says -- and go strong on the lash line and crease.

Lips go nude
"The nude lip is back again this season," says CoverGirl makeup artist Molly Stern. But there's a fine line between nude and ghostly. Apply a nude lipstick like Prestige Lipstick in Pout ($4.25, find drugstores at prestigecosmetics.com) to give lips definition, then dab a bit of your daytime gloss in the center of your lips to add dimension and to keep your look from being too drab.
