Slicked back
Hayden Panettiere surprised most when she went this short, but her teased updo works well with choppy layers. To get it:

1. This look works best on unwashed hair. Use a teasing comb to tease the top layer of your hair until you get the height you want.
2. Mist the top of your head with a ton of strong-hold hairspray like TRESemme Tres Spray Super Hold Hairspray, $3.99 to prevent it from falling flat.
3. Then run a dab of styling gel through your ends, and comb through for a slick look.
4. (For a straighter look, run a flat iron over your hair before applying any product.)

Rocker-esque bangs
Selma Blair's eye-grazing look works best if your hair is straight and falls below your ears and above your chin. To get it:

1. Apply smoothing cream to damp hair and blow dry straight using a flat paddle brush.
2. Run a flat iron over the bottom half of your hair to get it super straight.
3. Then use a round brush to blow dry your bangs, and curve it inward for the slightest bit of volume.
4. Apply a few drops of shine serum (try Joico K-Pak Protect & Shine Serum, $16.99) to your palms and run them gently over your hair to add a gorgeous sheen.

Modern bob
Michelle Williams' modern bob is a great look for busy moms -- professional yet edgy at the same time. To get it:

1. Mist damp hair with volumizing spray and blow dry using a round brush to add volume.
2. Now comb hair over to one side. (This might not stay put at first, but keep styling it this way to get the shape to stick.)
3. Style your bangs over your forehead, and mist with a ton of hairspray like L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray, $6.99 to keep them in place.
4. Tuck the rest of your hair behind your ears.

Retro waves
Katharine McPhee's gorgeously retro-inspired hairstyle works best on hair that falls below the ears. To get it:

1. Part your hair above the ear on one side of your head. Bring the rest of your hair over to the other side.
2. Use a 1-inch curling iron like Conair Instant Heat 1" Curling Iron, $11.99 to curl the tips of your hair outward. Use your fingers to shape them as they cool.
3. Mist all over with strong-hold hairspray, and push down on the top of your hair to flatten it a bit.

Edgy pixie
Rihanna's unique pixie is perfect for those who love experimenting with their short hair. To get it:

1. This first part takes some serious bravery. Ask your stylist to shave one side of your head, and leave long layers on the other side.
2. The rest is easy. Just mist hair with volumizing spray and blow dry straight using a round brush.
3. Use a flat small iron (try ghd Original Ceramic Styling Iron 1 inch, $220) to straighten your layers for more definition, and mist with shine spray to finish.
