The country's top acne dermatologist weighs in on what acne products really work to get clear, radiant skin

Getting acne to do a disappearing act is never an easy task, but in Hispanic women, it can be David Blaine-tricky. According to Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, acne in Latina skin has to be treated quickly to reduce the risk of dark spots.

Here, the ingredients that work wonders on Latina skin, plus the product picks to match. Get ready for your clearest skin ever.

Oily Skin, Meet Your Match
The Ingredient: salicylic acid

This beta-hydroxy acid should be a staple in any oily-skinned woman's acne-fighting routine. Zeichner says that while it's exfoliating dead skin cells into oblivion, it's also removing oil. Can you say double-whammy?

Try:

Proactiv+ Complexion Perfecting Hydrator: This moisturizer contains a healthy dose of salicylic acid along with skin brighteners like licorice extract and bearberry root to keep your skin breakout-free and glowing.

Clearasil Daily Clear Hydra-Blast Oil-Free Face Wash: This creamy formula contains two percent salicylic acid to help clear breakouts without being too harsh.

The Ingredients: glycolic acid and lactic acid

If your skin is dry or sensitive, Zeichner says that these two alpha-hydroxy acids are your best bet. These ingredients work similarly to salicylic acid, sweeping away dead skin cells and helping to control oil, but aren't as irritating. As an added bonus, glycolic acid is also an effective anti-ager.

Try:

Mario Badescu Rolling Cream Peel With AHA: The combo of lactic acid and peach acid smoothes away dead skin, and shea butter provides essential moisture.

Epicuren Glycolic Lotion Face Peel: This lotion boosts cell turnover, revealing more even-toned skin and keeping pores free of gunk. It tingles a little at first, but you'll wake up to better skin in the morning.

The Stinky Skin-Savior
The Ingredient: sulfur

Zeichner says that this anti-inflammatory ingredient kills acne-causing bacteria, making it an effective, albeit smelly, acne-fighter. It's probably safest to use this ingredient at night or risk making a couple enemies in the cubicles next to you.

Try:

Kate Somerville EradiKate Acne Treatment: Simply dot this spot treatment on blemishes with a clean cotton swab, and watch your acne disappear. Just make sure not to use it more than once a day, or risk flaky skin.

Proactiv+ Skin Purifying Mask: With a mixture of six percent sulfur and kaolin clay, this mask sucks junk from pores while a blend of antioxidants and botanicals keep skin from drying out.

Giant Pimple Buster
The Ingredient: benzoyl peroxide

Zeichner says that this is best for banishing "red, angry acne." "It is a myth that Hispanic patients should avoid it," he says. "It is commonly used across all skin types." It works by killing acne-causing bacteria, but it can bleach fabrics (In other words, make sure you're not sleeping on a fancy pillowcase while you're using it.).

Another word of caution: Benzoyl peroxide is a powerful ingredient, so make sure you're applying moisturizer and keeping your skin hydrated. Drying out your face isn't going to get rid of your acne, it's going to make it worse. Plus, Zeichner says that skin irritation from medications can also lead to dark spots -- more reason to keep your skin hydrated.

Try:

Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Emergency Spot Fix: One of our editors may or may not keep this treatment in her purse, in case disaster strikes. Its potent benzoyl peroxide formula zaps pimples quickly and effectively, and soothing lavender helps balance skin irritation.

Clearogen Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Lotion: This benzoyl peroxide lotion also has a blend of fatty acids to regulate oil production and green tea to nourish skin and help protect it from free radicals.
