According to Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, acne in Latina skin has to be treated quickly to reduce the risk of dark spots.

The Ingredient: salicylic acid

This beta-hydroxy acid should be a staple in any oily-skinned woman's acne-fighting routine. Zeichner says that while it's exfoliating dead skin cells into oblivion, it's also removing oil. Can you say double-whammy?

Zeichner says that this is best for banishing "red, angry acne." "It is a myth that Hispanic patients should avoid it," he says. "It is commonly used across all skin types." Another word of caution: Benzoyl peroxide is a powerful ingredient, so make sure you're applying moisturizer and keeping your skin hydrated. Drying out your face isn't going to get rid of your acne, it's going to make it worse. Plus, Zeichner says that skin irritation from medications can also lead to dark spots -- more reason to keep your skin hydrated.
